"When I hear of the arrest of a friend who did nothing that (deserved being) arrested, it makes me feel I shouldn't go", he told the BBC.

U.S. President Donald Trump says he sees no reason to block Saudi Arabian investments in the United States despite concern over a missing Saudi journalist, saying the Gulf nation would then just move its money into Russian Federation and China.

The Washington Post, citing unnamed USA officials, reported on Wednesday night that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had ordered the abduction of Khashoggi.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo then had a follow-up call with the crown prince to reiterate the US request for information and a thorough, transparent investigation.

"Reports about Jamal's fate have suggested he was a victim of state-sponsored, cold-blooded murder", said Post publisher and chief executive Fred Ryan.

The Post, citing anonymous US officials familiar with the intelligence, said Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordered an operation to lure Khashoggi from his home in Virginia to Saudi Arabia and then detain him. "We're working with Turkey, We're working with Saudi Arabia", he said. "We're probably getting closer than you might think but I have to find out what happened". The video later shows some of the men leaving a hotel near the Saudi consulate and Khashoggi entering the consulate. "As you can see, any time you turn on the news, you open the newspaper, there is a lot of speculation and a ton of rumors we're making determinations and watching this for facts".

Eliot Cohen, a top State Department official under then-President George W. Bush, said the message Trump has sent is bad, both about journalists and everybody else.

In his last interview three days before his disappearance, he said he did not think he would return to Saudi Arabia.

The mystery has captivated the world but also threatens to harm brittle Turkish-Saudi relations and hurt efforts by the crown prince to improve the image of his country with a reform drive.

Turkish officials claim that Mr Khashoggi was murdered within its walls.

A day earlier, more than two dozen US Democratic and Republican senators, including Corker, invoked a human rights law to demand that Trump formally investigate Khashoggi's disappearance.

Trump on Tuesday said he was "very concerned about it".

"We can not let this happen to reporters, to anybody", Mr Trump said on Wednesday.

MSNBC "All In" host Chris Hayes took to Twitter with a weird conspiracy on Wednesday, pondering if wealthy Saudi Arabians are shelling out cash to President Trump in exchange for the authorization to kill critics. We will continue to monitor this situation and provide updates as available.' Sarah Sanders, ' she said.

'There's a sense of entitlement, I hate to use the word, arrogance, that comes with dealing with them, ' said Sen.

Khashoggi had gone to the consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to get paperwork he needed for his upcoming marriage while his Turkish fiancee waited outside.

The president added that he would invite Khashoggi's fiancee, Hatice Cengiz, to the White House to meet him, after she called for Trump to get involved in the matter.

Sabah reported that 12 of the members arrived early on the day of the disappearance, based on photos captured at passport control. Yet no search had begun as of 6 p.m., and Turkish officials told a pro-government daily that the Saudi side had requested a postponement.

The Post report cited USA intelligence intercepts of Saudi officials discussing the plan, as well as interviews with some of Khashoggi's friends.

Citing a person familiar with the case, the report said US intelligence intercepted the communications of Saudi officials elaborating on a plan to seize Khashoggi.

On his first global trip as president, Mr Trump visited Saudi Arabia and announced $US110 billion in proposed arms sales.
