RSF suggests such a probe could be carried out by the U.N. special rapporteur on Freedom of Expression and the U.N. special rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions, in conjunction with the U.N. working group. The wealthy former government insider had been living in the United States in self-imposed exile.

"We call for cooperation between Turkey and Saudi Arabia to conduct a prompt and impartial investigation into the circumstances of Mr Khashoggi's disappearance and to make the findings public", United Nations human rights spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani told a Geneva news briefing.

The Washington Post columnist and gadfly to the Saudi royal family disappeared a week ago after entering the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul to settle some paperwork. Saudi Arabia has denied the allegations.

Turkey has not issued any proof to back up its claims.

Mr Erdogan was more circumspect, saying on Sunday he remained "positive" and would await the results of an investigation as Turkish authorities continue to look at camera footage and airport arrivals and departures.

The U.S. State Department is looking into accusations that Saudi Arabia was involved in the alleged murder of Khashoggi.

In March, the State Department approved a $670 million arms sale to Saudi Arabia, part of a promised $110 billion in deals touted by Trump after his first presidential trip to the Saudi capital past year. It plans to move forward with its search of the Saudi consulate soon.

The interview briefly touched on the Khashoggi case, with the crown prince stating he had no knowledge of the journalist's fate or whereabouts and that he had left the Istanbul consulate. He's gone missing after entering a Saudi consulate in Turkey. The official said there is no hard evidence as to whether Khashoggi, a columnist for the Washington Post, is dead or alive. The source did not say when the U.S. became aware of the discussions.

The two countries have such an obligation under both criminal law and global human rights law, she said.

The watchdog accused the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen of "numerous violations of global humanitarian law, including likely war crimes".

Meanwhile, Mr Trump told reporters in the Oval Office he has a call in to Khashoggi's fiancee, Hatice Cengiz, who has appealed to the president and first lady Melania Trump for help.

Who is Jamal Khashoggi?

While Riyadh claimed he had left the building afterwards, Turkish police said Khashoggi did not come out of the consulate.

The president did not provide details on a USA investigation.

US intelligence agencies captured communications of Saudi officials discussing a plan to draw Khashoggi back to Saudi Arabia from his home in Virginia and then detain him, a former senior USA official said.

Trump describes U.S. -Saudi relations as "excellent". Jamal's well being, as a Saudi citizen, is our utmost concern and we are focusing on the investigation as a means to reveal the truth behind his disappearance.
