A Chinese city, Chengdu, has perfected plans to replace the city's streetlights with an "artificial moon" by 2020.

The chairman of Chengdu Aerospace Science and Technology Microelectronics System Research Institute, Wu Chunfeng, announced the project at a national mass innovation and entrepreneurship conference last week, the official publication of the Chinese Communist Party reported, which will be used to "complement the moon at night" and will allegedly be eight times as bright.

The southwestern city of Chengdu will be the focus of an illumination satellite, reports the People's Daily. The new moon will be capable of illuminating an area of up to 50 miles (80 kilometers) in diameter, according to PDO.

A French artist once envisioned a cosmic version of Versailles' famed Hall of Mirrors, reportedly proposing the creation of an artificial moon powered by a necklace of mirrors that would reflect light back onto the streets of Paris.

It also will have solar panel-like wings on its surface which can be adjusted for precise lighting.

A Chinese city is exhausted of relying on electricity and the regular old moon to provide lights around town at night.

Any concerns about light pollution or the disruption to nocturnal animals appeared to be quashed at the event. Wu said that his company has been working on developing and building an "artificial moon" for years and that the technology is now finally mature enough to shoot for a 2020 launch. The project aimed to redirect sunlight onto Russian cities, but the space mirror misfired at launch and the entire project was soon cancelled due to budget issues, according to the New York Times.

Wu estimated that new moons could save the city of Chengdu around 1.2 billion yuan ($173 million) in electricity costs annually, and could even assist first responders during blackouts and natural disasters.

The moon orbits the Earth about 380,000 km from the Earth, while the man-made moon is expected to be put on an orbit within 500 km from the Earth, the state-run China Daily reported.
