'Halloween' opening weekend breaks box office records

New 'Halloween' Has A Record Breaking Opening Weekend Box Office: ‘Halloween’ Kills Competition with Historic $80M Debut

It also marks second biggest debut for a horror film behind last year's "It", which had a $123 million opening. It fell just short of Tom Hardy's superhero film Venom, which had a $80.2 million opening a few weeks ago. Halloween also had the tenth best opening for an R-rated movie of any genre.

In "Halloween", Curtis plays Laurie Strode, reprising the role that made her famous in a final face-off with Michael Myers. Critics liked it a lot (80 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), and audiences dug it as well (the B+ Cinemascore is actually very high for a horror film).

Overseas, "Halloween" generated $14.3 million from 23 markets for a global start of $91.8 million.

"I am enormously proud of this film", said Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions, who co-financed the film with Miramax. Considering the film cost just $10 million to make, the opening-weekend numbers can't be considered anything but a massive success.

If all those "seconds" aren't good enough for you, the new Halloween had the biggest opening for any "slasher" movie, according to figures from Forbes. Venom is still doing pretty well, dipping only another 48.3% in its third weekend to fall to third place. In its third weekend in theaters, it collected $18.1 million, bringing its domestic total to $171.1 million. That brings its North American tally to $28 million.

Rounding out the top five were Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween and First Man, which earned $9.7 and $8.5 million, respectively.

Universal and Blumhouse's Halloween, the 11th entry in the log running horror series, took the box office by storm. It placed sixth with $7.5 million after nearly unanimous recommendations from critics.

A number of well-received indies also made their debuts.

In limited release, Jonah Hill's directorial debut, Mid90s, is arriving in four theaters with an estimated $249,500, which works out to a robust per-screen average of $62,375.

Cast member Jamie Lee Curtis poses at a premiere for the movie "Halloween" in Los Angeles, California, U.S., October 17, 2018.

Because some of the Halloween movies attempt a very solid throughline of continuity, there are little winks and nods to things that happened previously which very almost go by unnoticed, but still manage to connect things.
