He struggled to find his best tennis during the week, but Roger Federer did what champions do in his home country at Basel, Switzerland, raising the title for the ninth time after a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win over surprise finalist and qualifier Marius Copil.

In addition to Basel he has also won nine career tournament titles at the Gerry Weber Open on grass in Halle, and eight at Wimbledon.

Roger Federer claimed his 99th career title with victory over Marius Copil in Basel.

"Maybe I had to win through fighting. maybe it was different than some of my past victories". That's what I need if I want to do well in London, to do my best there. It means the world to me. Second-seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa led Croatian No. 6 Borna Coric 7-6 (2), 1-2 when Coric retired.

Ranked No 93 in the world, Copil will rise to a career-high ranking regardless of Sunday's outcome.

"I was feeling good on court apart from closing it out, I had a few errors there".

"I've been celebrating already, had a great time - a lot of kids running around, cousins and family and friends".

"I'm starting to really get to understand the conditions and it was consistent, my most consistent match by far. I was able to use my experience today". The 37-year-old has reached the final the past 12 times he's played the event.

Federer started his slow recovery with a break for 4-5; he then saved set points to level at 6-all, winning a game in which he double-faulted twice in a row and saved a set point with an ace.

Federer's next opponent is seventh-seeded Daniil Medvedev, who beat fourth-seeded Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Federer stayed focused, breaking back with a smash victor in game seven and taking all the momentum, securing another break at 4-4 and closing the match on own serve in the following game after saving a break point, rattling off five straight games to secure the title in style and lift his 99th ATP trophy in an fantastic career.

The title is Federer's first in more than four months since winning on grass at Stuttgart in June.
