The ‘sickening’ Trump ad that links cop killer to caravan migrants

His words are clear: He's killed cops and he's "gonna kill more cops soon".

President Donald Trump launched an ad Wednesday warning Americans of violent crime, not from the extremists who shot up a synagogue or mailed bombs in the past week, but a crime committed by an undocumented immigrant four years ago.

It is unclear who created, or paid for the ad.

Trump shared this frightening visual aid with his 55.5 million Twitter followers, along with the caption "Vote Republican now!" and in under 24 hours it had already been viewed nearly two million times.

President Trump is leading an 11th-hour Republican charge in Florida amid a surge of interest from young voters that could secure the pivotal state for the Democrats on Tuesday.

"This is a sickening ad. Republicans everywhere should denounce it", said Republican Sen.

The online ad features courtroom footage of Luis Bracamontes - an illegal immigrant from Mexico convicted in the 2014 killings of two police officers in Sacramento, California - saying in accented English he would kill more cops.

The spot includes expletives uttered by Bracamontes during his trial professing regret at not killing more officials. The campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment. And the video claimed "Democrats let him into our country" and "Democrats let him say". "Democrats let him stay", the ad states in bold letters. A senior counterterrorism expert in the Trump administration told CNN that there's no evidence "ISIS or other Sunni terrorist groups are trying to infiltrate the southern USA border".

Not surprisingly, the backlash was swift and focused, with the general consensus being that president Trump had ripped a page out of George H.W. Bush's book by channeling the infamous Willie Horton ad; a video that's always haunted Bush Sr.as a moral low point in his political career.

Horton was a convicted murderer who went on a crime spree while on furlough from prison under a program supported by Dukakis, then governor of MA.

As Massachusetts governor, Mr Dukakis supported the furlough program.

The video stood in stark contrast to an ad circulated by the Trump campaign earlier in the week that highlighted rosy economic numbers and depicted gauzy scenes of American suburban life.

Tom Perez, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, called the new ad the "dog whistle of all dog whistles".
