Injured Nadal pulls out of ATP Tour Finals

Rafael Nadal 'Being world No. 1 playing nine events is a miracle' Rafael Nadal: Spaniard to have surgery on ankle injury and miss ATP Finals

The second racket of the world Rafael Nadal due to injury will not play Final of the ATP tournament.

The Spaniard announced his withdrawal on his Facebook account, saying he had an ankle injury which would not let him play.

Nadal has only been able to take up his hard won place at the Finals three times in the past seven years - and last season was far from fit as he pulled out after just one match. Much of Nadal's highlights this year did, however, come before lingering injuries got the best of him. I have done everything possible to reach the end of the season in full fitness, both for Paris and London; I really wanted to play.

He hasn't competed since he retired from his U.S. Open semifinal against Juan Martin del Potro because of a painful right knee.

Five-time champion Novak Djokovic will face Alexander Zverev, Marin Cilic and John Isner in the group stages at the ATP Finals after the draw was confirmed in London on Monday.

"We had detected this a while ago and it has bothered me every now and then, but since the problem in the abdominal muscle will prevent me from playing in London we will make the most of this moment to intervene in the ankle and to avoid future problems".

Nadal, 32, withdrew from the ATP World Tour Finals in London next week in order to have the treatment.

Djokovic beat Nadal in a Wimbledon semi-final thriller before ending a two-year Grand Slam drought by defeating Kevin Anderson in the final. "However, since the abdominal problem has prevented me from playing in London, we chose to operate on my ankle".

"Hello everyone: I am writing these words to you as the end of the season", Nadal wrote in Spanish on Twitter.
