(5) Cindy Hyde-Smith won a plurality in MS and is heavily favored to win her runoff election to become the first woman ever elected to the US Senate from her state.

Half a century ago this week, New York's Shirley Chisholm was elected the first black woman in Congress, and several of the black women elected Tuesday have said their campaigns were inspired by her example.

The first Muslim women have been elected to Congress, with Democrat Rashida Tlaib winning in MI and Ilhan Omar winning in Minnesota. Arizona's race is still too close to call, but either way, the state will be sending its first woman to the Senate (Democrat Kyrsten Sinema or Republican Martha McSally.) Marsha Blackburn is Tennessee's first female senator, despite Taylor Swift's endorsement of her Democratic opponent, and by electing Jacky Rosen, Nevada became the fifth state to have two female senators. BOSTON, MA - OCTOBER 01: Boston City Councilor and Democratic congressional candidate Ayanna Pressley speaks at a rally calling on Sen.

A number of women have also achieved significant firsts in their states, including Democrats Veronica Escobar and Sylvia Garcia who become the first Latina Congresswomen in Texas, and Alyanna Pressley from MA, becoming her state's first black representative in Congress. Heightened political activism in the Trump era brought out many more men running for office, too, and numerous female candidates were Democrats running in districts that are gerrymandered or all but assured to vote Republican.

For this wave of women leaders, the next few years are going to be about much more than stereotypical women's issues. She's also a lesbian and was among a number of of LGBTQ candidates. Women make up roughly a third of the Democratic caucus, so they'll have a more powerful voice in the majority than Republicans had when they controlled the House, according to Debbie Walsh, director of the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University.

The "women's wave" included MA, where Democrat Ayanna Pressley was elected by Seventh District voters to be the first African-American woman to represent the state as a House member. Among the new names joining Congress after Tuesday are a host of young, Muslim, Latin, immigrant, and LGBT canidadates. Tallahassee, Florida Mayor Andrew Gillum lost to Ron DeSantis, shooting down hopes that the Sunshine State would elect their first Black governor. (Republicans retained control of the Senate.) This means we might see Trump's tax returns after all, and we'll likely not have to go through another Affordable Care Act repeal in the next two years.

Women will break the current record of 84 serving at the same time in the U.S. House.

There are also now nine female governors, matching the record set in 2004. The Democrat surged in the latter part of the year, polling neck and neck with Noem, but fell just short on Election Day.
