Bryce Harper rejected 10-year, $300M offer from Nats

Phillies’ positional needs centered on but not limited to Bryce Harper and Manny Machado Report: Bryce Harper Turned Down $300 Million Contract From Nationals

Harper headlines one of the most valuable free-agent classes in Major League Baseball history, which also includes infielder Manny Machado, closer Craig Kimbrel and former Cy Young Award victor Dallas Keuchel.

However, his quick rejection of the deal doesn't exactly inspire hope he'll be returning to Washington.

In meetings with team owners, Boras said he has made it a point to note in documents shared that "I know that anyone who's done what Bryce Harper has".

Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors predicted last week that Harper would sign a 14-year/$420 million contract.

They reportedly touched base with the Nationals on him at the non-waiver trade deadline this past season and claimed Harper on waivers less than a month later, although the two teams were unable to come to an agreement on a trade.

Indeed, the Nationals need starting pitching, a catcher and to upgrade their bench. It will cost them roughly $US13 million.

Nightengale now says that the $300 million offer is no longer in play. "But I'm uncomfortable with the statement that we're a better team without him". Given Harper's history with the Nationals, he seems unlikely to make a deal elsewhere without first circling back. It turns out that he rejected a contract offer from the team that very day.

Boras did not counter, but word is the Nationals would go higher for a reasonable offer - though how much higher remains to be seen. Looks like they want to get the bad taste of Dexter Fowler's deal out of their mouth and throw some more money to big-name free agents! Zack Greinke ($34 million), David Price ($31 million) and Clayton Kershaw ($31 million) all got more. But no position player has ever earned an average annual value of more than $US27.5 million (Alex Rodriguez and Yoenis Cespedes). It was not enough.
