Mickelson, the three-time Masters champion, won 1-up with a last-hole birdie. It is not yet known if viewers who paid for the event would be credited.

After missing his birdie attempt on the third playoff hole, Mickelson told Woods to pick up his 5-foot par attempt with the green illuminated mostly from production lighting, saying, "I don't want to win like this, let's go".

Woods humbly sat by, taking the good-natured trash talk he knew would be coming if he did not prevail.

With temperatures falling into the low 50s and light fading, that sent the match to a 93-yard chip shot back to the 18th hole from the practice putting green. But Woods chipped in for a birdie and Mickelson missed, squaring the match. Woods was only here for a practice round Tuesday, then joined his family in Palm Springs, California, for Thanksgiving and then returned Friday morning.

Both players were miked up for the entire round, giving fans a rare insight into discussions between themselves and their caddies, but it was the unmistakable tones of Samuel L. Jackson introducing them that was the first sign of what was to come.

Then there was the outrageous first-hole wager after Mickelson bet $100,000 he could make birdie.

Both birdied the par-5 18th and then parred the first playoff hole before it went to the par-3 extra hole - which was pitch shots off the practice putting green - that they kept playing until there was a victor.

They both parred the 18th and then played it again, with Woods holding a clear advantage after Mickelson found a greenside bunker and had to blast to 30 feet.

Woods said he enjoyed the match, even if he was on the losing end.

For the event to be compelling, Woods needed to have more of his game on display.

"In the big picture, nothing is going to detract from the career and accomplishments he's had, " Mickelson said of Woods.

But for there to be long-term success, such an event needs Tiger and Phil to be. well, Tiger and Phil. But Mickelson also won three of the side bets and a fancy championship belt to boot. Going from a potential putt for $9 million, Mickelson instead pulled the putt left of the cup, squaring the match going to the 18th hole. "It was back and forth, very competitive, on a golf course that was playing a little bit on the tricky side".
