Inches of snow expected around southeast Michigan Monday

KQ2 Forecast: Blizzard Warning in effect for entire KQ2 Viewing Area Snow Storm Underway in Southern Iowa

Commuters in Chicago and across the Midwest faced inches of heavy, wet snow as they headed back to work on Monday (Nov 26) after the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend, with the storm knocking out power, icing roads and cancelling some flights.

A blizzard warning was in effect across northern IL until Monday morning, due to "life threatening travel conditions", according to a warning by the National Weather Service, as heavy snowfall and wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour swept the region.

The National Weather Service said that seven to 20 cm fell across northern Missouri on Sunday.

Schools in parts of Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and IL called off Monday classes. One coming to Fargo from Chicago has also been cancelled.

Monday's cancellations were caused by the inability by airlines to have aircraft in Kansas City for the morning flights, according to Kansas City International Airport.

Disruptions were still ongoing on Monday morning, with almost 500 flights canceled and 200 delayed. State police at noon reported likely blizzard conditions should exist by about 6 p.m. today (Sunday) and into the night.

On Sunday, Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer declared a state of emergency in the state after five to 36 centimetres of snow fell in some areas.

Snow is forecast to end in southeast Nebraska this morning, while ending in southwest Iowa by early afternoon.

Kansas City, Missouri, saw about 5.3 inches of snow, breaking a November snowfall record set in 1923. The heavy snow and strong winds across the Midwest are expected to cause whiteout conditions, which can affect visibility, causing risky travel.

Chicago Department of Aviation spokesman Lauren Huffman said that the city was able to open its parallel runways at O'Hare on Monday afternoon.

Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories were in effect from central Missouri into eastern MI. That included semitrailer trucks jackknifed across the highway.

The declaration came as a large chunk of Interstate 70, spanning much of the state, shut down due to poor visibility and road conditions.

Planes were grounded at the airports in Kansas City, Missouri; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Omaha, Nebraska, Des Moines and Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for Genesee, Huron, Lapeer, Saginaw, Sanilac, Shiawassee and Tuscola counties through 3 p.m. Monday.

The storm was forecast to hit parts of northern IN and southern MI early Monday before moving further East.

"Expect the weather to roll in sometime this afternoon/early evening". This will lead to whiteout conditions, making travel extremely risky.
