Trump agrees to USMCA agreement with LGBT provisions

Canada on track for Friday signing of USMCA once details finalized: Freeland Trump signs trade deal with Canada and Mexico

Before signing the deal he continued to refer to as "the New NAFTA", Trudeau told Trump the two should continue to work together to eliminate steel and aluminum tariffs.

Trump called the measure the "largest, most significant, modern and balanced trade agreement in history", during his remarks with Trudeau and Nieto.

Standing between Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican president Enrique Pena Nieto, Mr Trump said: "As part of our agreement, the United States will be able to lock in our market access to Canada and Mexico, and greatly expand our cultural exports - something we've been wanting to do for many years". The deal will also need approval of the House, which transfers to Democratic control in January.

"Canadians got here because Team Canada was driven by the interests of the middle class", Trudeau said.

Given that continuity, a number of family farm organizations from the USA and Canada including the National Farmers Union Canada and the US -based National Family Farm Coalition have urged a better deal, one "that promotes fair and sustainable food systems".

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday urged US President Donald Trump to remove tariffs implemented by the United States on Canadian steel and aluminum products earlier this year.

Trump himself acknowledged that it hadn't been easy, but said "battles sometimes make great friendships".

"Today's signing of the USMCA by the leaders of the United States, Mexico and Canada is another important step on modernizing and improving the trading relationship between our nations to ensure free trade is truly fair trade".

But although the agreement has been signed it must be ratified by the legislative bodies of all three countries.

Before Trump arrived in Argentina he injected additional drama into the proceedings by cancelling a planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The agreement was signed by Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto on his last day in office. It updates the trade pact to reflect the rise of the digital economy since the original NAFTA took effect almost a quarter century ago. Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren said she would vote against the pact unless it is reopened to toughen labour and environmental standards, and does more to stop USA companies from moving to Mexico. He struck a more optimistic note on Friday, saying, "It's been so well-reviewed, I don't expect to have very much of a problem". "And also, this is the struggle in the battle of our time will the United States or China to be the economic superpower of the 21st century".

Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), the only out lesbian in the U.S. Senate, said in a statement she opposed NAFTA on the basis that it cost her state manufacturing jobs and would only back the new agreement if it helps Wisconsin workers.

As a candidate, Trump had decried NAFTA - signed by his opponent's husband - as the "single worst deal ever approved".

Trump faces a series of diplomatic challenges over the weekend, most notably whether he can strike an agreement with Xi. ME companies mostly dodged Canadian tariffs imposed this summer in retaliation for the steel and aluminum taxes. "We've taken a lot of barbs and a little abuse, but we got there", Trump said of the pact.

Trump was greeted warmly at the Casa Rosada by Argentine President Mauricio Macri, a longtime business acquaintance.
