Turkey's Erdogan Says Not Aiming To Harm Saudi Royals In Khashoggi Affair

Theresa May wants meeting with Saudi prince to call for 'transparent' probe into killing of Jamal Khashoggi MBS and Vladimir Putin are all smiles at G20 summit

Top officials from the administration of US President Donald Trump have said they've seen no direct evidence linking the murder to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, but the Central Intelligence Agency reportedly has found a connection.

Trudeau said he had a frank conversation with the prince at a leaders' dinner on Friday, telling him there was "a need for better answers on the killing of Khashoggi".

Trump has said it is vital to preserve the decades-old alliance with Saudi Arabia, as the kingdom is the top buyer of USA weapons and key oil supplier. "Unless the perpetrators are found out, the whole world and the Islamic community shall not be satisfied".

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo acknowledges that the humanitarian crisis in Yemen - where millions are at risk of starvation - has reached "epic proportions" but says Washington and Riyadh are offering aid.

He said solving the killing would be in the Saudi royal family's interests.

But, while leaders appeared to ignore Prince Mohammed on stage during the "family photo", many went on to have closed-door bilateral meetings with him during the two-day summit.

Trudeau said he told the 33-year-old crown prince that Canada would always look to "improve opportunities and protections and rights for people around the world, including in Saudi Arabia".

"Of course, that might be valid from a legal point of view", Erdogan said.

Earlier this month, the United States imposed its own sanctions on Saudi officials for the same reason.

A meeting with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to focus on Ankara's investigation into the death of Khashoggi at Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul in October.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he brought up the Khashoggi issue while at the summit.

"To me, we've got a relationship with a country that's a semi-important country and a semi-important ally".

"We have evidence that Saudi journalist Khashoggi was killed in 7.5 minutes, we shared that evidence with all countries who demanded", he said.

Meanwhile Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has told CNN that he saw all the intelligence held by the U.S. on the killing and said there was no direct evidence linking Prince Mohammed to the murder.

But Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with his Saudi counterpart in Buenos Aires, and again defended the U.S. embrace of the crown prince. "There is no direct reporting connecting the crown prince to the order to murder Jamal Khashoggi", Al Jazeera quoted Pompeo as saying.

Citing portions of the CIA's written assessment, the Wall Street Journal first reported on Saturday that Mohammed had sent at least 11 messages to Qahtani before and after the killing.

The crown prince enjoyed a buoyant welcome at the G20 on Friday from Putin, the two exchanging a high-five and grinning broadly as if they were long-lost friends.
